  • Lakers was founded in Minneapolis before moving to Los Angeles in 1960. The name 'Lakers' was inspired by Minnesota's moniker "Land of 10,000 Lakes." When the franchise relocated, the ownership chose against altering the name, and the term "Lakers" remained with the team.
